The Old City of Castelvetere Sul Calore

Castelvetere Sul Calore, Italy

Chapter 1

Castelvetere Sul Calore is located in the county of Avellino, about an hour southwest of Naples and not far from the Amalfi Coast on the eastern side of Italy.

This mountain town holds a very special place in my heart. It is the birthplace of my dear friend Teresa Moccia. It is she who is responsible for planting the seed and nurturing the idea of visiting Italy.

In this quaint mountain town with approximately 1800 people, you won’t find fast food restaurants, pricey stores or crime. Here in Castelvetere the air is fresh; the gardens are full of organic vegetables, fruit and flowers.

There are three sections to the town.

The main street by the piazza is cobblestone with stores located on the main level and apartments above. The original town, which is located inside the Castle walls, hosts three of the five churches. Still today you can catch a glimpse of old world charm, cobblestone streets, the smell of fireplaces, even the remains of the deceased tucked away under the floorboards of the original church.

Celebrations are held in two places, in the Piazza in the newer section of the town and in the old walled section of the Castle.

There is no bank in Castelvetere, no high-rise building, but the view is spectacular. Each night I sat on my balcony I was mesmerized by the thousands of lights flickering across the 27 plus mountain towns that surrounded me.

I invite you to see what I photographed in a fifty-mile radius of my time in Castelvetere Sul Calore, Italy.
